Additional Houses for Coega

Filed in: All, Coega

Additional houses are being developed in the construction village at Coega.

The Coega Development Corporation is to build an additional 142 units at the Coega construction village for the Canadian aluminium company Alcan. This will apparently cost approximately R47-million.

These units should be completed by July next year.

These homes are being built because current occupation capacity will not be sufficient to meet the demands of the aluminium project. The aluminium investment is huge, and Coega is meeting the demands!

The targeted primary tenant for the construction village was the aluminium smelter project. Occupancy is not yet optimal but will be soon with agreement having been reached recently on the electricity supply with Alcan.

240 lovely units in the current R108 million construction village are permanently occupied, with lease agreements of between 6- 12 months, while 134 are unoccupied and are currently rented out on a temporary basis.

The occupants of the leased units are workers and family members of workers employed in the zone or by other institutions nearby.

The current Vulindlela Construction Village was part of Phase 1, which had been halted when the smelter project was delayed.

Now that deals have been signed, the Coega Development Corporation will now complete this phase. An additional 142 units will be made up of 35 single units and 107 two-bed duplexes. This will add a total of 319 beds, in addition to the current 1 500.

During these full operations, 1 000 jobs will be created, with between 200 and 300 of these being professional jobs.

Yes, Coega is continuously meeting the demands for all investors.
