Development for Port Elizabeth’s Coast

Filed in: Property Developments, All

A R116 million facelift development project aimed at Port Elizabeth’s coast is now on track!

This fantastic project will include the construction of a walkway and cycle path stretching from St George‘s Strand in the east to Flat Rock in the west, and is even expected to extend to Sardinia Bay.

It is therefore a massive project and aimed to be completed by 2020. It will have a significant impact to the Nelson Mandela Bay.

The major priorities? The provision of a clean environment boasting clean water and beaches, easy access to the beaches for ALL communities and, in a safe and secure environment. The project has been divided into 4 zones for developmental purposes as it cannot be tackled all at once. Zone 1 is aimed at the St Georges Strand where work has already started in upgrading and improving facilities at Wells Estate which already boasts Blue Flag status. Development of the walkway and the cycle path has already started. It will pass through the Swartkops River Mouth to New Brighton Beach, pass through the Deal Party coastline and then to Kings Beach, Hobie Beach, Pollok Beach and Flat Rock.

The cycle path can also be used for sporting, recreational and even for the Ironman event. Beaches will be improved and the environment will be uplifted.

The most demanding aspect is the New Brighton Beach to the Deal Party coastline, the area around Algorax and the Fishwater Flats water treatment works. This land is derelict and degraded and therefore is in need of massive upgrading. The communities in that area will soon have significant access to the wonderful beaches close by them.

Dune restoration is also already taking place at King‘s and Pollock beaches. There is funding in the municipal budget for the next 3 years to implement the project.

The aesthetics will be greatly improved, including extra lighting. Close circuit cameras will be installed and operated from a central control room at the South End Fire Station.

Over 15 projects have been identified in the municipality‘s integrated beachfront development plan. Our beaches are about to become even better and more beautiful!
