Alexander Road High School

Let the mundane brick exterior of Alexander Road High School not deter you. Some truly fantastic things are taking place inside the school. Happy, vibrant and full of love along with top quality education and excellence is what Alexander Road high continually boasts.

The school was established on 24 January 1955 in pre-fabricated buildings on the grounds of the Andrew Rabie High School. There were 155 pupils, Mr Winston Cordingley (the principal) and 5 teachers. Three additional classrooms for ‘Std 6’ were later opened on 7th Avenue, Newton Park. In 1956 they moved to their present home. Over the years additions and alterations have been carried out to cater for the ever increasing drive to provide quality education at Alex.

These fantastic additions include a restaurant complex, solar heated swimming and waterpolo pool, the music block, auditorium and high-tech computer laboratories.

At Alex, they strive to create a sense of belonging in all their members and will continue to integrate academic, cultural and sporting endeavours, spiritual, emotional and moral development as well as social awareness.

Alexander Road High School boasts numerous fantastic sports, subjects, societies and activities. There is no time to be bored!

Creativity is as much a part of Alexander Road’s ethos as practicality. The arts, particularly music, are a high priority and the school boasts its own music radio station and several near-professional student bands. Alex employs four music teachers and is looking to hire a fifth in the form of a jazz musician next year.

Only the highest quality of education is taught by qualified teachers. In fact, Alex boasts a 100% matric pass rate and a matriculation exemption of 82%. The have been ranked in the Business Times as one of the top schools in South Africa.

Outcomes-based education is being introduced and students’ portfolio work is assessed on a continuous basis. At Alex, they are committed to providing the best necessary education your child requires and is dedicated to teaching skills that future occupations require.

But even more remarkable is Alexander Road’s ready embrace of new ideas in every sphere.
