Grey Junior & Grey High School

For excellence, discipline and a high quality of education taught by only the best teachers, come to Grey. Grey has built up a reputation as being one of the leading Schools in South Africa and has achieved highly impressive results in academic, cultural and sporting activities on a constant basis. The Grey School consists of separate junior and senior boys schools. They were established in 1856 boasting beautifully created buildings of Victorian architecture and gables. It also boasts rich cultural heritage.

Soon after the landing of the British Settlers in 1820, a small but rather flourishing settlement existed on the shores of Algoa Bay. However, any form of education was sadly lacking. That is, of course, until the arrival of a Scottish graduate named John Paterson. John Paterson got Sir George Grey, Governor of the Cape Colony, interested in establishing a form of education. Sir Grey made land available for endowment and he set up a Board of Enquiry in 1855. John Paterson’s effort in getting Sir George Grey to take an interest in education led to the growth of the School to which Sir George gave his name. The first headmaster was Mr J. R. Macleish.

The Grey Schools strive to provide excellence in academic, sporting and cultural activities. English is used as the medium of instruction and admission to pupils is on an equitable basis irrespective of race or faith, taking into account the existing educational inequalities.

At Grey, all pupils are afforded the opportunity to develop their full potential in mind, body and spirit, within a happy, secure and disciplined environment. Whilst preserving and building upon the Grey traditions, they will always be mindful of society, changing needs and adapt where necessary without compromising their standards.

Grey offers an extensive curriculum to all pupils. The curriculum aims to further the spirit of the motto; mind, body and spirit. The timetable consists of an eight-day cycle of six periods per day, each of approximately 45 minutes in duration. Subjects offered include English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Biology, Physical Science, History, Geography, Business Economics, Accounting, Art, Music, Woodwork, Computer Studies, Physical Education, Library and Guidance.

Situated on a beautiful campus along with the Junior school, their sporting facilities include 4 rugby, 5 cricket and 2 hockey fields, tennis and squash courts, swimming and water polo pools as well as a shared Astroturf at the Old Grey Union Club. There is also a wide variety of clubs, societies and cultural activities.

Hostel facilities are provided for out of town pupils and the total enrolment for both schools is approximately 1500.

With a proud heritage of tradition, academic achievement, sporting excellence and a broad range of cultural and musical achievements, Grey School is definitely one of the best schools providing top quality education for your child.
