Remember the old beetle car? Flower power? Well, since the first Beetle rolled off the line on 31 August 1951, Volkswagen South Africa has become one of the main passenger car manufacturers in the country.
Today, their market share has more than doubled since the 80’s. It has increased to such an extent that now more than 1 in 5 cars sold will be a Volkswagen.
In 2001 they celebrated Volkswagen’s 50th anniversary in South Africa and proudly watched their 100 000th export car - a Golf 4 1.6 - roll off the production line. Since then, they have launched a number of new models or model derivatives.
Every step in the production process has as its central focus on Volkswagen’s commitment to providing South Africans with cars of exceptional quality. The very fabric of each vehicle that rolls off their assembly lines, from the top of the range Golf GTI to the nippy little Chico 1.4., has been built with this integrity.
From the very first Beetle through to the high-tech, high performance Golf, on to the launch of the New Beetle in 2000 and the Polo range in 2002, the Volkswagen era spans 6 decades of fine history and rich memories. We all have memories with Volkswagen cars!
Volkswagen in South Africa is the biggest private sector employer in the Eastern Cape with more than 6000 workers in the factory and thousands of allied jobs at suppliers. In order to bring investment to the region, create further employment and uplift the community, Volkswagen spends approximately R18 million annually on numerous Corporate Social Investment initiatives.
